Ramjattan calls on Government to demonstrate leadership in COVID fight

Leader of the Alliance for Change and APNU+AFC Member of Parliament, Khemraj Ramjattan believes the government must first demonstrate leadership if it wants to get the COVID-19 pandemic under control.

During an appearance on a television programme, Mr Ramjattan took several Government Ministers to task for not observing the COVID-19 protocols that are in place. He believes citizens will follow in the footsteps of those officials who do not observe the measures that are in place.

“This thing requires like any other thing leadership. You have to denounce gatherings, there it is we have Dharamlall (Minister of Local Government) hugging some girl without face mask playing Phagwah with so many people, what kind of example is that.” Ramjattan said during the Alliance on the Move tv programme in Berbice.

The former National Security Minister said the Government seems unwilling to impose tough restrictions and curfew times that would assist to curb the spread of the virus.

“It is a don’t-care-a- damn attitude and that is what is causing this thing. The increases are because of, in my opinion, a lot of people gathering and no enforcement. You go to the seawall, you go to a number of places, the streets in Georgetown, it is crazy.” Ramjattan stated.

Ramjattan recalled when President Ali walked out of a cricket match recently after he noticed patrons were not observing the COVID-19 protocols. He said he hopes that the President will similarly denounce the actions of his Ministers, many of whom were seen playing Phagwah unmasked last week and hosting events with large gatherings.

Guyana has recorded more than 1500 coronavirus cases for this month, making it the month with the highest number of new infections since the pandemic was first recorded in Guyana a year ago.

The Health Minister has been warning citizens against large public gatherings and has indicated that he has also been forced to remind his cabinet colleagues against hosting events that might allow large gatherings.
