Ramotar confident of regaining majority

President Donald Ramotar on Friday admitted that he is still to fully study the decision by the Opposition to move a no confidence motion against his government.

The combined opposition parties hold the majority in Guyana’s National Assembly.

Speaking at a mid afternoon press briefing at his Vlissengen Road office, President Ramotar said whether the elections are called now or later, he is confident that his party will regain the majority in the National Assembly.

“Whenever the elections are held, whether they be held tomorrow, whether it be held next week, whether it be held next year or in 2016, the PPP will regain the majority, I am very confident of that”, the President said.

He said the time has not come as yet for him to truly study the no confidence motion and the impact. Asked about the readiness of the elections commission, Mr. Ramotar noted that there are some concerns with regard to some names on the current list of electors but it is an issue that is being looked at.

Earlier this week, the PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee indicated that the party will examine the possibility of a national alliance when it gets fully into election mode. On Friday, Mr. Ramotar said the PPP has always been looking to create partnerships and that will continue. He did not want to say whether any specific group is being targeted by the PPP Civic for an alliance.

The Alliance For Change has filed  it’s No Confidence motion with the National Assembly and the motion is expected to be presented and debated when the National Assembly comes out of recess in October. With both Opposition parties indicating their strong support for the motion, it is likely that the motion will be passed when it comes up for a vote.

Once the motion  is passed, the President will be forced to call national elections within three months. But the President could avoid the no confidence motion and its vote and call early elections himself before the National Assembly has time to consider and pass the Opposition motion. The President said though it’s an area he will be looking at, he has not given it much thought because situations could change in “a day” or week.
