Re-migrant Pilot complains about Government’s approach to remigrants

Despite the government’s call for overseas based Guyanese to return home and support the growth of Guyana, it is facing tough criticism for its approach towards re-migrants.

Vice Chair of the National Toshaos Council, Lenox Shuman on Tuesday questioned the government’s sincerity in creating a welcoming environment for Guyanese who are thoughtful about returning home.

The Amerindian Chief described the government’s attitude as one that says “bring your money, spend your money, but we are not interested in you, your education nor your ideas.”

“As a re-migrant, I can say with absolute certainty that Guyana is not a welcoming place to re-migrants,” Shuman said in a Facebook post.

He received an outpouring of support from other Guyanese who also supported his contention.

The airline pilot who lived abroad for several years before returning to Guyana recently said he was informed of vacancies at the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority prior to his arrival.

“I was told I was amply qualified and thought I could help to improve aviation safety, assist in elevating the aviation standards, and maybe even help Guyana get the [Cheddi Jagan International Airport] to a Category One status which would see the world open to us through Aviation,” he added.

He claimed that his application is now untraceable even though he gave it directly to the Head of the GCAA.

“As a Chief and Vice Chair of the National Toshaos Council, I thrive to give my people the best and strong representation that Indigenous Peoples deserve. Government is less than interested,” he added.

Shuman also believes that the government does not want to see or encourages strong indigenous leaders.

“They like them malleable and politically aligned. I am neither.”

During several visits overseas prior to the 2015 elections and after, President David Granger called on Guyanese in the Diaspora to return home and invest.

He had promised that under an APNU+AFC administration Guyanese living in the Diaspora would be encouraged to participate in the development of Guyana.
