Recover Guyana launches green entrepreneurship programme for youths

Recover Guyana, a non-governmental organization, today launched Project ENGAGE, which is a green entrepreneurship programme designed to empower young people across Guyana.

That empowerment is being done by equipping youths with the tools, resources and knowledge needed to initiate and maintain environmentally sustainable businesses in eco-tourism, renewable energy, waste management and organic farming.

In partnership with Scotiabank and Dutch offshore company, Van Oord, Recover Guyana will train more than 150 young Guyanese between the ages 16 and 35 in green technologies, eco-friendly innovations, and sustainable business practices. Participants will get an opportunity to access up to $2 Million in grants to transform their ideas into viable businesses.

At today’s launching ceremony at the National Library, President of Recover Guyana, Dr Dave Lalltoo said the ENGAGE Project is a movement rooted in the belief that young people have the power to drive meaningful change in their communities.

“Our mission is to provide young entrepreneurs with the tools they need to turn their dreams into reality, through knowledge, mentorship and resource to create businesses that are not only profitable but environmentally friendly and sustainable,” Dr Lalltoo said.

He added that the project aims to foster a new wave of eco-friendly businesses that address the dual challenges of unemployment and environmental conservation.

Country Manager of Scotiabank Guyana, Nafeeza Gaffoor said Scotiabank is pleased to partner with Recover Guyana to execute the project that would provide opportunities for young people to build their skills.

“Scotiabank remains committed to supporting the young people of Guyana, and I am especially proud that we were able to collaborate with Recover Guyana to people our young people achieve success. At Scotiabank we recognize that long term and economic prosperity in our community depends on future generations. When young people in the community succeed, families, businesses, and entire societies are positioned to benefit in years to come. By helping everyone build a stronger future, we can build a stronger world together,” Gaffoor said.

ENGAGE will be piloted in January 2025 targeting 150 young adults in Regions Three and Six.

At its core, the project is designed to provide the participants with the skills and resources needed to build out eco-friendly businesses.

Recover Guyana hopes to expand the project in 2026.
