Remaining members of Teaching Service Commission take oath of office

All seven members of the Teaching Service Commission have now been sworn in paving the way for the Commission to begin its work. The remaining two members took the oath of office today.

The members of the Commission are Ms. Maydha Persaud, Avril Crawford, Doodmattie Singh, Lancelot Baptiste, Joan Ann Davis-Monkhouse, Shafiran Bhajan, Satti Jaisierisingh, and Chief Education Officer Mohammed Saddam Hussain.

These members will serve the Commission for three years. The Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and one other member will be full-time members of the Commission.

The Commission, which is responsible for the appointment of teachers, and the removal and exercise of disciplinary control over any person acting in such offices, was not appointed since the last one was appointed back in 2018.

In brief remarks today, President Ali urged that members of the Commission to get to work to ensure the challenges facing the nation’s teachers are addressed.

He underscored the importance of the Commission in ensuring that suitably qualified persons are appointed as teachers, stating that placing ill-qualified and ill-suited persons to educate Guyana’s children can be disastrous to their future and the human resource development of the country.

“I encourage you to be faithful to that oath. Your actions will contribute to no small measure in ensuring that the teaching profession is populated by persons who are worthy of educating the present and future generation,” the President urged back in December.

When the life of the last Teaching Service Commission ended, only promotions of Senior Teachers up to the year 2020 was effected.
