With several sections of the historic Georgetown City Hall building in disrepair and falling to pieces, the City Council has launched a renovation fund to pick up support for the complete restoration of the City Hall.
At the launching this morning, City Mayor Ubraj Narine said the decision to launch the renovation fund followed discussions among councilors and the administrative staff.
He said the project will be piloted by a special committee.
“It is something that bleeds my heart to see that one of our historic building is falling apart”, Mayor Narine said, as he called on the government, the private sector, city residents and the international community to join hands with the council to get the restoration going.
The Council has set up a special account at Demerara Bank and the Mayor has assured that there will be proper accounting for all funds received.
Chairman of the Private Sector Commission, Gerry Gouveia attended the launching ceremony and pledged his full support to the initiative.
Mr. Gouveia said the project will receive support from the private sector in more than just words, noting the historical importance of the City Hall.
The Georgetown City Hall was built in 1889 and is one of the oldest wooden buildings in the country.
There have been previous attempts to repair the wooden building but many of those plans never fully materialized.
