An apparent row over the ownership of rice lands is believed to have been the cause of a kidnapping and murder of a Canadian national, which today resulted in three men being charged before the Courts.
Appearing before Magistrate Alex Moore this morning were suspected mastermind of the crime, rice farmer Moonasar Beharry called “Brickhead” and brothers, Aszim Shivgobin and Charran Sendhan.
They were not required to enter a plea to the indictable murder charge which accused them of murdering Nicholas Jaipaul between the 16th and 20th August at Moleson Creek in Berbice.
The three have been remanded to jail and will make their next Court appearance on the 15th of October.
The victim was staying at his grandfather’s property at Number 69 village Corentyne when he disappeared on the night of August 16.
As investigators began to press for answers, one of the accused confessed to the murder and took investigators to the place where the man’s body was dumped.
At the scene, investigators found the burnt remains of the Canadian national.
In addition to leading investigators to the scene of the dumping of the body, the accused, Aszim Shivgobind also implicated his brother and the rice farmer. Both were immediately arrested.
The murder victim had traveled to Guyana to spend some time with his aging grandfather who is reportedly the owner of large plots of rice lands that he had reportedly planned to pass on to the grandson.
Although charges have been filed, the probe into the murder is ongoing.
