President David Granger came in for harsh criticism from the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) on Monday as it decried the high incidents of criminal activity and violent crimes that occur daily across the country.
The opposition party which was booted out of Government in May, said President Granger’s conclusion that there is no new crime wave is false as it referred to several headlines published in several local dailies. Party General Secretary Clement Rohee said the PPP is in stark disagreement with the President on his denouncement of any new crime wave.
“The recent criminal occurrences expose the falseness behind Granger’s claim that there is no new crime wave,” Rohee reasoned. He said the President’s statements are nothing more than a “disingenuous attempt to evade the issue.”
Rohee told the Monday morning press conference that the popular perception is that crime is on the increase and believe the police statistics also speak to this reality. He said no amount of semantics can hide the fact that crime is on the increase in Guyana.
“Granger would want to wish this away by claiming that criminals are being caught, measures are working, gangs are being dismantled and the crime situation is under control,” he added.
The PPP General Secretary added that the Granger administration has failed miserably to address the crime situation. Rohee also questioned the effectiveness of several strategies employed by the government and the anti crime plan submitted to the government by the Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud.
He also called out the government on the parallel plan which is being formulated by Presidential Adviser Edwards Collins; saying that such a move shows that there confusion on how this issue should be addressed.
“The government will end up like a dog chasing his own tail,” Rohee said as he urged the government to address the crime situation on facts and not fiction.
Mr. Rohee served as the Minister of Home Affairs for several years under the PPP civic. The crime situation in the country was on the increase during all those years.
