Sanitation worker dies in freight lift accident at Ocean View hospital

A 29-year-old sanitation worker lost his life yesterday while on duty at the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Lilliendall.

The young man, Kevin Smith, was reportedly using a freight lift in a section of the building when it crashed to the ground, leaving him with several fatal injuries. He was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital’s emergency room where he died.

The young man who worked with a private cleaning company was at the facility along with other co-workers carrying out their duties when the incident occurred.

The external metal lift is only used to transfer food and laundry between the different floors of the hospital.

The man had just used the stairs to take some cleaning supplies to a co-worker when he decided to use the lift to get back to the ground floor. There is still some construction work ongoing at the hospital.

An investigation is underway.
