Schools to remain closed in May as COVID spike continues

As the number of new Coronavirus cases across the country continues to climb and concern mounting in some communities about the low vaccination rate, the Ministry of Education has decided to keep schools closed for in-person learning.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand today said in-person classes will only take place for those students preparing for the CXC exams who have been attending classes.

“We have been advised that given the numbers for both COVID infections and as well as the rate of the vaccination process, we will stay closed except for the classrooms that have already been reopened and have already returned to school…At the end of May, I am going to let you know what we will be doing in June”, Manickchand said.

In a pitch to encourage persons to take the COVID-19 vaccine, Manickchand said while taking the vaccine is not mandatory, she would still want to see more persons taking it, especially parents and teachers.

She said she hopes the teachers will separate fact from the noise when it comes to the vaccines, adding that those parents who also want to see their children returning to school should consider taking the vaccine to ensure the country gets enough people vaccinated that could then stem the spread of the virus.

Schools in Guyana have been closed for in-person learning since March 2020. Some schools conduct virtual classes while others provide worksheets to assist the students with their studies at home.
