The Guyana Defence Force’s Coast Guard and the Guyana Police Force continued a joint search and rescue operation for the pregnant woman and her fiancé, who went missing on Sunday afternoon during while swimming at Unity Beach, on the East Coast of Demerara.
The search and rescue mission has now become a search and recovery operation.
In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said at around 2pm on Sunday, the expecting mother, 21-year-old Lyodisa Waldron and her fiancé, 29-year-old Andri Francis of Victoria East Coast Demerara were swimming at Unity Beach when Waldron reportedly began drifting out to sea.
The young lady repeatedly called out for help, forcing the fiancé to rush to her assistance. He never made it as the waves became rough and they both vanished under the water as confused family members gazed on.
A search and rescue operation was launched later on Sunday, but the couple was nowhere to be seen.
The young woman’s mother – Roxanne Waldron – told News Source that she was at the beach with other relatives and friends when disaster struck.
She said she was looking away from the area when a grandchild raised an alarm about the incident.

“Me ain’t see what tek place but dem seh, she husband went out to save her. She called him, but like he ain’t tek it serious, and then she called fuh he again, and then he tek it serious. He put up his hands, and he went down and never come up back,” the woman said.
Francis’ mother told News Source that her son had planned to travel to Linden to attend church with his older brother, but opted to go to Unity Beach instead after learning that sections of the highway were under water.

With tears rolling down her face, she recalled warning her son on Sunday morning to be careful while at the beach.
“He called this morning and said somebody called and said the highway flood, so they can’t make it up Linden, so, they will come to Unity Beach instead. So, I said son be careful. He said mommy I could tek care of me self, I could swim good. I said Andre be careful, be careful. He said mommy nothing is going to happen to me, I good you know, I good, your son good,” the woman said.
She said Francis was a loving, caring and hard working young man, who was always there to lend her a hand and to assist her.
“I could call upon him anytime. Mother’s Day, we did the foundation in front of the yard and I called him, and he worked and he worked, he worked in the rain. Rain, rain, rain, he ain’t back down, he worked, worked, worked, he worked in the rain,” the woman said.
The young couple was expecting their first child together in August and were planning a baby shower for early July.
