Search and Rescue initiated after woman goes missing at Kaieteur falls

A massive search and rescue operation has been initiated after a female tourist disappeared from her tour group during a visit to the Kaieteur Falls.

The woman was part of an Air Services tour group to the Kaieteur Falls on Tuesday afternoon. She was discovered missing as the group came together for the departure from the location.

Search teams have already been dispatched to the area and other search teams are expected to head out early on Wednesday morning.

When the group that the woman was part of, arrived at the Ogle Airport Tuesday evening, all of the tourists were questioned about the woman and when she may have gone missing. They remained at the airport for over an hour.

A decision has been taken to put a hold on all tours to the Kaieteur falls area while the investigation is ongoing.

Over the past months, several tour companies have been taking an increased number of visitors to the world famous single drop waterfalls. Many of the visitors would walk out into the Potaro river, which pours over the cliff, when the tide is low.

There have been concerns expressed by many persons in the past about that practice.

About six years ago, a young woman jumped off the cliff at the waterfalls and committed suicide. Her body was found several days later during a massive search effort at the bottom of the 741 ft waterfalls.
