The body of 40-year-old Gyaneshwarie Sivanand, has been retrieved from the bottom of the Kaieteur Falls and is currently at a Georgetown funeral home.

The woman’s body was retrieved from the bottom of the 741 ft. waterfalls by a Special Forces team of the Guyana Defence Force. She went missing two weeks ago during a tour of the Kaieteur National Park and it is believed that she committed suicide by jumping to her death.

It remains unclear why the woman may have decided to take her own life, but some of the other tourists who were on the trip, said she complained bitterly during their flight to the area, about her marriage falling apart.

Other persons who were on the tour did not notice that the woman was missing until they were preparing to head back to the Georgetown.

An initial search by the Guyana Defence Force and Guyana Police Force came up empty handed but over the weekend, Park Rangers spotted the body at the bottom of the waterfalls in an area that was previously submerged.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out on the body.
