Well known Guyanese televangelist and self proclaimed “Pope”, Dr. Philbert London has found himself at the centre of a sex tape scandal that has sent social media in a frenzy but his church in tears and prayers.
Dr. London is the founder and head of the Miracle Centre Ministries of Durban Street in Georgetown.
He has a loyal following at his church which has special parking for “His Holiness”, and many more who follow his television programmes from the comfort of their homes. But this Sunday morning, the Pope’s teachings have taken the back pew to the “revelation and power” from his bedroom.
Late on Saturday night, several photographs with Dr. London and different women in sexually compromising positions, started to make the rounds on social media. One photograph showed a smiling London cuddled next to an unidentified woman, while another photograph had a man believed to be him, who was naked and sprawled between two naked women.
A third photograph showed the Pope well dressed in a suit that carries his church’s emblem, showing off his private part in selfie style.
There is also a number of video recordings of the local “pontiff” having sex with different women. In the videos, he could be seen setting the camera before he started the acts while the women waited patiently on their calling.
The photographs and videos were reportedly leaked by a former “sex mate” of the preacher who claimed that she was involved with him for a number of years.
Dr. London’s wife passed away a few years ago. While many persons on Facebook have said that they are disgusted by his acts, some have pointed out that he will have to answer to God for his “immorality”.
“This man does deh preaching one thing and doing another”, one woman commented, while another proclaimed “this is why I don’t go to church and follow these self made pastors”.
On Sunday morning, Dr. London was absent from his gold coloured throne in his church. Members of his congregation gathered and while not openly speaking about the embarrassing controversy, many were in tears as they sang hymns like Amazing Grace and It’s Amazing what Prayers can do, and gazed at the empty throne.
His daughter led the church in worship.
In response to all the controversy, the Pope’s only comment came in the form of a Sunday morning scripture on his official Facebook page. He quoted from the book of Psalms, Chapter 35, Verse 4, which states “Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek and require my life; let them be turned back and confounded who plan my hurt!”
He stayed away from the other Psalms scripture which speaks about “thy rod and thy staff”.
