The three Presidential Candidates who came under scrutiny over their dual citizenship and were almost removed from contesting the elections, will now be able to remain on their respective party lists and contest the elections.
The Public Relations Officer at GECOM, Yolanda Ward told News Source this afternoon that the Elections Commission has made a decision to have the three candidates, Lennox Shuman, Valerie Leung and Dr. Vishnu Bandhu remain on the list as Presidential Candidates for their parties.
All three of the candidates wrote the Commission after information surfaced that they might have still been dual citizens on nomination day.
While some Commissioners said the three were removed, the Chairman of GECOM, Justice Claudette Singh sought more information from the candidates.
The candidates had contended that the Elections Commission had no power to remove them from the list of candidates and that would have had to be done by the Court.
They all reportedly provided documentation to the Commission that they had renounced their foreign citizenship.
It is prohibited under the Constitution of Guyana for someone who has pledged allegiance to another country to contest elections for a seat in parliament.
