Slowe’s case over Police promotions and new PSC to be heard Monday

Days after Attorney Selwyn Pieters wrote Chief Justice Roxanne George seeking an early date for the urgent hearing of cases about the Police Service Commission, the matter is set to be heard on Monday before Justice Gino Persuad.

Former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Retired Asst. Police Commissioner Paul Slowe, last week moved to the Court seeking an injunction to halt any promotion of members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) by the new Police Service Commission.

Mr. Slowe’s contention is that no promotion can be allowed to proceed in light of his previous challenge which is still pending before the High Court. He is challenging the President’s power to suspend the last Police Service Commission.

The urgent application filed by Slowe was to prevent the publishing of any promotion list until the first matter is resolved. But before the case could be heard acting Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken, over the weekend, announced the promotions of over seven hundred police ranks. Mr. Hicken’s appointment as acting Top Cop is also being challenged.

When Mr Pieters asked the Chief Justice for an urgent hearing of the matter he complained that the actions of the Police Service Commission and the acting Top Cop may render any future orders granted by the Court irrelevant.

He also said that an urgent hearing of the application is to ensure that the appropriate orders made will ensure that the applicants’ rights, interests, and remedies are not prejudiced.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Calvin Brutus was promoted last weekend, last night slammed the Court action challenging the police promotions.

He said that the Acting Commissioner whose appointment is also being challenged and the Police Service Commission acted properly when they promoted the ranks last week.
