Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has announced that workers at the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) will also receive an 8% increase in their wages and salaries for 2022, despite the current state of the sugar industry.
“The sugar workers will also get an 8% increase in their salary. We decided that, that the sugar workers will also benefit from the 8% salary increase,” the Vice President told reporters today at a press briefing.
Three weeks ago, the Government announced an across the board 8% salary increase for all public servants.
Today’s announcement came three days after the National Assembly approved $1 Billion in supplementary funding for the sugar corporation.
Three months ago, the National Assembly cleared $3.4 Billion in supplementary funding for GuySuCo, less than six months after more than $6 Billion was allocated in the National Budget to the sugar company.
In the current budget year, GuySuCo has now received over $10 Billion.
In the 2021 National Budget, $2 Billion was initially approved for the sugar corporation but within three months, another $1.5 Billion was given to the sugar company in supplementary funding. Before the end of 2021, the company received an addition $2.3 Billion plus an additional $1.3 billion was used to facilitate the disbursement of a one-off grant of $250,000 to the more than 5,000 sugar workers who were severed under the APNU+AFC Administration, though they had already received severance pay, and the majority of them were rehired.
In 2020, a total of $7 Billion in state funding was provided to Guysuco.
