Suspect in custody over attempt to load over 146lbs cocaine on KLM flight at CJIA

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Agency has announced the arrest of one person after its agents disrupted an attempt to load 146.9 pounds of cocaine onto an Amsterdam bound KLM flight at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.

The cocaine was found in 53 plastic wrapped parcels stashed at the bottom of a unit load device, which is used to load cargo and luggage onto an aircraft.

Details of the suspect were not released, but CANU said its agents acted on information received and carried out the operation at the Cheddi Jagan Airport on Saturday as the KLM aircraft was being prepared for its departure.

Last year, three staffers at the airport were arrested and charged during an attempt to load a suitcase packed with cocaine onto a London-bound British Airways flight.

CANU has been conducting a number operations to curb drug trafficking with the assistance of local and international counterparts.
