Teenage bus driver dies in Corentyne accident

An 18-year-old bus driver from Canje, Berbice died in an accident on Sunday night after losing control of the mini-bus he was driving, resulting in the bus slamming into a pile of sand on the roadway and toppling over several times.

The dead driver has been identified as Marvin Ishmile of Betsy Ground, Canje in Berbice.

Police investigators have reported that the accident occurred just before 7pm on Sunday along the Borlam Public Road in Corentyne.

According to information gathered by investigators, the 18-year-old was driving the mini-bus at a fast rate, when he lost control, slammed into a pile of sand on the side of the road. The bus flipped over several times after hitting the pile of sand. When it eventually came to a stop, persons in the area rushed to the aid of the driver and another occupant.

They were both pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where the driver was pronounced dead, while the other person was treated for several injuries.

The body of the young man who died, was taken to a funeral home for a post-mortem examination.
