Three houses in Sophia were gutted by fire last evening in a suspected case of arson. The Guyana Fire Service was summoned to the scene in North Sophia just after 7 pm when one house was noticed going up in flames.
Within minutes, the two nearby houses, which were located in the same yard, were also ablaze.
According to reports, the fire was started after a man who lived in one of the houses and who it is suspected had a mental break-down, set a motorcycle ablaze under one of the houses.
The motorcycle burst into flames and quickly engulfed the house, eventually spreading to the other two.
In a statement last evening, the Guyana Fire Service stated that upon arrival at the scene, firefighters observed that one motorcycle was completely destroyed, one building was fully engulfed, and others were threatened.
The Fire Service said Preliminary investigations were carried out on the cause of the fire, which was maliciously set. Fire investigators confirmed that the origin of the fire was the motorcycle.
Seven persons have been left homeless.
