At least four houses were completely gutted, leaving Several persons homeless as a fire ripped through Pike Street, Kitty early this morning.
Fire fighters were summoned to the scene just after 3:30 as the fire was spotted in one of the wooden houses.
The fire quickly engulfed that house and by the time firemen arrived, a second house was on fire.
Being aided by strong early morning winds, the fire quickly moved to its right and left, engulfing two other houses in the process, while threatening houses to the back of them.
Fire fighters were forced to source water from the trench just along Vlissengen Road.
Upset residents complained that the fire service appeared unprepared to deal with large blaze. Firefighters could be seen dashing with hoses to the trenches seeking water. Some residents provided buckets but those could not offer much help.
“This is bare nonsense, every time a fire come, is the same problem”, a resident shouted.
Firemen were forced to rush into one of the houses to get a woman and her daughter out as they tried to save some of their belongings.
A young girl broke down in tears as she watcher her home go up in flames.
“Mommy where we gon live, how i going to school”, she cried, as neighbours comforted her. The mother watched on in disbelief as she explained that she never expected the fire to reach her house since it started two houses away.
Its unclear what triggered the early morning blaze, but up to news time, fire fighters were still at the scene dousing nearby houses.
