
The Guyana Tourism Authority has announced that the country continues to see an increase in visitor arrivals when compared to same period last year, crediting the development to the recently held T20 Cricket World Cup as well as the re-branding of several of the country’s tourism products.
In its half-year sector update report, the Tourism Authority announced that visitor arrivals increased by 14.6% in May 2024 compared to May 2023, with 28,327 visitors.
The GTA said this is the second-highest arrival for the period on record. From January to May 2024, visitor arrivals increased by 12.8% compared to the same period in 2023, totalling 141,078.
In relation to arrivals by country, the majority of visitors came from the USA. A total of 47% of visitors who arrived in Guyana came from the US, followed by visitors from the Caribbean with 27%, Canada 8%, Europe 6%, Latin America 6%, and other markets (6%).
The Authority has also noted the two new airlines that have been added to the Guyana route— SKYHigh Dominicana and United Airlines.
Additionally, the GTA said the first half of 2024 was a productive and historic period for Guyana’s tourism sector adding that the Ministry of Tourism, Industry & Commerce, the Guyana Tourism Authority, and its tourism stakeholders worked on several extensive, collaborative projects, programmes and initiatives to achieve significant strides in promoting and developing Guyana’s tourism product.
The GTA explained that the bread and breakfast properties programme has been extended to cater to the growing demand, thereby increasing the number of properties in its database.
In addition, the GTA said it has received some 7 awards in the last year for strides the country has made in Tourism. Further it said, that at the end of June 2024, the GTA has trained some 1267 persons in priority areas.
