Trini airport staff arrested after stealing phones from luggage on Guyana bound flight

(Trinidad Express) Five people have been arrested and are expected to be charged for stealing cellphones from the cargo in a plane that stopped off in this country on its way to Guyana.

Reports are a Caribbean Airlines flight in transit from New York to Guyana arrived at Piarco International Airport last Wednesday to offload cargo.

On Thursday, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service officers received a report from authorities in Guyana that nine cellphones were missing, however.

Among the missing phones were the high-end Samsung Galaxy S6 and Apple iPhones.

Sgt Joseph of the Arouca Criminal Investigation Department led a team of detectives to the airport.

Four male employees of Swissport, aged 23 to 26, and a 44-year-old female, who is said to be a lecturer at the Trinidad and Tobago Training Academy, were arrested as a result of those investigations.

Seven of the stolen cellphones were recovered.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a sixth suspect.

Investigations are continuing.
