Two elderly men die in separate fires

Within 24hrs, two men were killed in two separate fires in the country.

The Guyana Fire Service in a statement today said 75-year-old Sammy Munian lost his life on Wednesday afternoon when a fire engulfed his Fairfield, Mahaicony home.

An investigation by the Fire Service said, a fire had been set to a pile of garbage close to the man’s home and it spread to the house, engulfing it in flames completely. When the fire was doused, the elderly man’s charred remains were discovered.

Meanwhile in the Williamsburg, Corentyne area, 64-year-old Harmon Perreira lost his life in a fire that was caused by an electrical problem in an air conditioning unit.

A statement explained that the two-storey house was engulfed in flames early this morning. The Fire Service responded quickly and while they were able to douse the blaze, they were unable to save the man’s life.

The entire building was gutted.

Investigations into the two deaths are ongoing.
