Two elderly men have become the first COVID-19 recorded deaths for the new year in Guyana.
According to the Ministry of Health, the two men passed away while being patients of a medical institution. One of the men was 85-years-old and a resident of Region Ten, while the other was 70-years-old and hailed from Region Six.
While the two deaths are the first recorded for this year, the death toll from the coronavirus in Guyana now stands at 166.
A total of 13 deaths and more than 1000 new cases were recorded back in December.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has recorded 21 new cases as of midnight Sunday. There are four persons in the coronavirus intensive care unit and the total number of active cases now stand at 273. More than 400 persons made full recoveries in the past month.
Health officials continue to warn against large gatherings and are encouraging citizens to wear face masks once they leave their homes.
