Two serving members of the Guyana Police along with two other men were charged today in connection with bird smuggling.
The four were granted bail in the sum of $100,000 each after facing a charge of smuggling birds through the Cheddi Jagan Airport.
The Court was told that all four accused are without the requiste permission for wildlife export.
The four men, 31-year-old, Prem Rajram, 40-year-old, Gregory Ramkellawan and Police Officers 23-year-old, Alex Haywood and 35-year-old, Denzel Williams, all stood before the Chief Magistrate and denied the allegations made against them.
It is alleged that between the 1st November and the 8th December, 2018 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, the four men conspired with each other or persons unknown to export of a quantity of birds without the authorization of the Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission or the competent authority.
Court records further revealed that the Police officers, who were stationed at the Airport, obtained a sum of $600,000 from one of the other two accused to allow the illegal export of the birds through the airport.
After listening to the facts of the case, bail was granted by the Chief Magistrate and the four were told to return to Court later this week for the continuation of the case.
