Two suspects in custody for armed robbery of Asst. Police Commissioner

The Guyana Police Force has arrested two suspects for the Sunday morning home invasion and armed robbery of former Crime Chief, Assistant Police Commissioner, Leslie James.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed to News Source this morning that the two suspects were arrested late on Tuesday and are being grilled by police investigators. He said the Assistant Police Commissioner who was robbed at gunpoint, is expected to view an identification parade today as the police try to wrap up the probe.

From all indications, Police investigators believe they have nabbed the men responsible for the daring robbery. The Crime Chief would offer no other details on the case.

Assistant Commissioner James was at home with his family on Sunday morning when the armed men gained access to his house through a window and held him at gunpoint along with the other members of his family. He was relieved of all of his jewellery and his wife was also relieved of her gold jewellery.

Mr. James said he believes that the men gained access to his home through a window on the lower flat. The Lilliendaal property is currently under construction.

The robbery came just two days after the Guyana Police Force reported that crime in the country was “not spiraling out of control.”

The country has seen an increase in murders and robberies for this year when compared with the same period last year. The government has come under severe criticism from the Opposition, People’s Progressive Party for being unable to effectively tackle the problem since taking office six months ago.

On Tuesday, former President Donald Ramotar lashed out at the government over the crime problem and said the President should call out the Guyana Defence Force to join the crime fight.
