Guyana Defence Force Colonel, Sydney James who recently led evidence in the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry about missing GDF weapons has been appointed as an Assistant Commissioner of Police.
Mr. James was sworn into office on Friday and he will now serve as the Director for the Special Organised Crime Unit of the Guyana Police Force. The 54-year-old James served the Guyana Defence Force for 34 years and is considered one of the hardworking and dedicated and professional Officers to have served the GDF.
In November, 2013, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon announced that the way had been cleared by the cabinet for the creation and operationalization of a Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU). The new unit will focus on investigating suspected financial transactions suggestive of money laundering and financing of terrorism.
It will work closely with the Finance Intelligence Unit. The Unit is expected to have its own offices in Georgetown and the new Assistant Commissioner of Police will work along with the Commissioner of Police and his office. A dedicated staff is also expected to make up the Special Organised Crime Unit.
