Unresponsive small US aircraft crashes near Jamaica

An unresponsive small plane that lost contact with ground controllers Friday morning during a flight from Rochester, N.Y., to Naples, Fla., crashed into the sea off the island of Jamaica, Jamaican officials told the Associated Press.

The Socata TBM-700, a light business and utility plane, took off at 8:45 a.m. and its last contact was at about 10 a.m. The plane was carrying three occupants.

NORAD said the cause of the lost contact could be due to hypoxia. A fighter jet pilot observed condensation on one of the small plane’s windows.

Two F-15s had been launched to investigate the small plane over the Atlantic Ocean, NORAD said in an earlier statement. The plane reached the altitude of 25,000 feet, MyFoxTampaBay.com reported.

A flight track posted on FlightAware.com indicated that the plane had not made a planned turn toward Florida and had instead veered off into the Atlantic. The plane flew over Cuba. Once the plane reached Cuban airspace, the F-15s stopped tracking the plane.

“NORAD continues to monitor the situation in close coordination with the FAA. More information will be made available as it emerges,” the statement said.

The plane is reportedly owned by a developer from Rochester who maintains properties in Naples. (AP)
