The University of Guyana has welcomed more than 3,700 new students for the 2024-2025 academic year. It is the largest batch of new students in the University’s 61-year history according to Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Paloma Mohammed.
Among the new students at UG are three teenagers who exceeded expectations by acing the CXC examinations a full year or two ahead of the normal cohort.
Two of the students were accepted into the Computer Sciences programme in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the other student has been accepted into the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
“This is the largest class of students we are bringing into the University in its 61-year history and you are making history. But the significance of that, if divide the number of students who took the CXC exams to the 3,700 who are getting admitted you recognize that you are in a very select special and significant group,” the Vice Chancellor stated.
The Vice- Chancellor said the growing number of persons at the University is as result of a direct effort by the University to expand its footprint beyond the coastland and to ensure that at least one person from every Guyanese household attends University.

“And so those growing numbers that you see, is us fulfilling that promise that we made to the nation because we are a national university and that the mandate we work for ourselves to get a diverse group in here and to get everyone in and we said that because the prognosis for changing the lives of an entire family is that if you have at least one person from that family going to a university you can change that family because the income level of that family would change,” the VC said.
Registrar of the University, Dr. Nigel Gravesande, in his presentation, urged the students to make the most of their time at UG and to ensure that their time at the University is not wasted.
“You are indeed responsible for what you do and you must ensure that you do the work that will be required of you. While we expect you to assume and new levels of responsibility, please freshmen, realize that you will not be alone in this journey, if you find things difficult, don’t run away, seek help” the Registrar noted.

Through its eight academic divisions and nine Research Institutes and Centers, including an accredited College of Medical Sciences, School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation and the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the University has provided education, training and research for over 64,000 students in its 61-year history.
