US Embassy regrets Guyana’s revocation of US official’s work permit

As the Government of Guyana continues with its efforts to get the U.S Government to put a hold on its Leadership and Democracy Project, the U.S Embassy in Georgetown has expressed its disappointment over the move by the Guyana government to revoke the work permit and extension of stay status to the Chief of Party for the Project, Glenn Bradbury.

“The United States regrets the decision taken by the Government of Guyana, announced publicly April 30, to revoke the work permit it had issued to Mr. Bradbury on September 25, 2013”, the embassy said in a statement to the press.

The Embassy also said that it welcomes the willingness of the Government of Guyana to re-engage in discussions with the United States on democracy and governance, and specifically in relation to the USAID LEAD project.

According to the Embassy, the LEAD project is designed to benefit the Government and people of Guyana through the promotion of understanding and consensus-building within the National Assembly; greater citizen engagement with Parliament; civic education on local government and greater civic engagement among women and youth.

The LEAD project implements the objectives described in the USAID Assistance Agreement for Governing Justly and Democratically, reached between the United States government and the Government of Guyana in 2009, the embassy said in its statement.

The statement said the decision to revoke Mr. Bradbury’s permit is contrary “to our understanding of the Government of Guyana’s commitment to review together the LEAD program and to the spirit of the discussions proposed by the Government of Guyana itself.”

The Government of Guyana announced on Wednesday morning that it had revoked the work permit and extension of stay for the Chief of Party for the USAID Leadership and Democracy Project, Glenn Bradbury.

The announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon and comes at a time when the Guyana government appears to be stepping up its opposition to the project which is funded and organised by the U.S Government through its United States Agency for International Development-USAID.

Dr. Luncheon told a press conference at the Office of the President that “Mr. Glenn Bradbury who is the Principal Official of the International Republican Institute, contracted by USAID to implement the LEAD project, in the meanwhile, Mr. Bradbury has had his extension of stay and his work permit in Guyana revoked.”

The Opposition parties have criticised the Government of Guyana for its move to revoke the work permit of the project head.
