US seeks extradition of Guyanese ex-Policeman in drug trafficking case

Less than a month after the United States extradited a Guyanese born, US citizen to face murder charges in New York, the US Government has filed another extradition request.

At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court this afternoon, ex-Policeman, 34-year-old, Shawn Neblett, appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty, where the US Government through the DPP Chambers formally requested his extradition.

Neblett is wanted in the United States in connection with a drug trafficking matter. Details of the matter were not made known in Court today. However, it was requested that the accused be remanded until the outcome of the extradition case.

The accused, Shawn Neblett, told the Court that he is unaware of any charges that he is facing in the United States. He said he was arrested eight days ago and has been in Police custody since then.

The Magistrate remanded the man to prison until the 6th June, 2019, when the matter is expected to come up again.

The Guyana Police Force had issued a wanted bulletin for the ex-policeman in 2017 in connection with a drug trafficking probe at the Cheddi Jagan Airport.
