The US Government has announced plans to dispatch military forces to strengthen the fight against narco trafficking in the Southern Caribbean and Latin America. The move is expected to target drug pushers and drug gangs from Venezuela and other countries in the region.
US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, on Thursday made specific reference to the drug gangs in Venezuela and described the Venezuelan Government as a criminal organisation, while noting its alleged involvement in the drug trade and its threats against the oil ships in Guyana.
“The Maduro regime is not a government. It’s not a legitimate government. We’ve never recognized them as such. They are a criminal enterprise that basically has taken control of a national territory, of a country, and who by the way are also threatening U.S. oil companies that are operating lawfully in Guyana. So the President has been very firm. Anything that’s a threat to the national security threat to the United States he’s going to confront”, he said.
Guyana has been working closely with the US in the area of the drug fight. The US has also been looking at links between drug pushers in Guyana and the cartels in Venezuela.
Just recently, three Guyanese nationals, including a senior Police Officer, were sanctioned by the US Government over drug trafficking claims.
While the US has provided information on the drug ring and named the three Guyanese involved, there has been no arrests or charges locally following those sanctions.
