We must promote our strengths and employ better communication strategy -Ramjattan

Leader of the Alliance For Change, Khemraj Ramjattan, has admitted that the coalition government and its partners may not have been doing a good enough job at showcasing the strengths of the coalition and the government.

At the opening of the AFC’s Congress, Mr. Ramjattan told the party’s faithful that “we must appreciate what we have done in the past 18 months. We must build on our strengths”.

According to Ramjattan, the AFC and Government must employ a better communication strategy to ensure its message gets over to not just party members, but to all of the people of Guyana.

He said there is a need for proper explanations on decisions in a timely manner because as a party in government, there is an obligation to provide the nation with answers.

According to Ramjattan, there has been lots of “whining” from supporters about decisions made and issues being addressed but there must proper explanations given.

“We are humans and we are going to err at times, but we are going dust ourselves off, pick ourselves up and run again”.

On the issue of the coalition, the AFC does not have to be seen as an antagonist to its partner to win its identity.

“Jealousies and pettiness , there will always be, especially coming from the lesser minds, but the party must seek to avoid that which will jeopardise the Coalition’s existence to the detriment of the Cummingsburg Accord or to the benefit of Jagdeo and the PPP”, Ramjattan said.

He added that there is a need for maturity shown by “our protesting members, we have to see quick resolutions to problems.”

With regards to getting younger people involved in the party’s leadership, the AFC Leader told the Congress that “We can easily have educated young people mobilized in the streets for some popular cause, especially when employment is scare. What has to be realized, and this is the challenge, is how to engage them to construct long lasting deliberative political and social organisations and institutions.”

Ramjattan is being challenged by former Party Leader, Raphael Trotman for the position of party Leader.
