Western Diplomats meet APNU over Prorogation of Parliament

The Western Diplomats representing, the United States, Britain, Canada and the European Union held discussions with Opposition Leader David Granger on Thursday at his Hadfield Street Office. The discussions surrounded the prorogation of Parliament by President Ramotar. That prorogation has suspended all sittings of the National Assembly.

According to a statement from Granger’s office, the Opposition’s position on the prorogation of parliament by the President was explained in detail to the diplomats. The release said  from all appearances the diplomats expressed a desire to see the parliament go back to work soon.

“The discussions were cordial, and centered mainly on the prorogation of the Parliament of Guyana. APNU iterated its position that there will be no extra parliamentary engagement with the President on the matters which were before the National Assembly, and that the Partnership will embark upon a series of measures dedicated to the restoration of the National Assembly as the most appropriate venue for the discussion and consideration of affairs of the state and the people”, the APNU statement said.

A number of organizations have been pressing the President to end his prorogation of the Parliament. The government says it is still open to dialogue though the opposition has indicated that it does not intend to meet with the government during the prorogation period.
