WIN Member of Parliament for Region One arrested over alleged assault of wife and child

WIN Party Member of Parliament for Region One, Deon La Cruz was arrested on Wednesday following allegations that he assaulted his wife and child in Moruca.

La Cruz, has been in police custody since the matter was reported to the police in the region.

According to the Police, an argument between the couple turned into a physical confrontation during which La Cruz allegedly assaulted the child.

Police noted that when the child’s mother intervened, she was allegedly attacked, pushed to the ground and briefly rendered unconscious after hitting her head.

The woman also alleged that La Cruz armed himself with a chopper and advanced toward her in a threatening manner, causing her to fear for her life.

In a statement issued by the party, through Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, the WIN party said it is aware of the reports that its MP has been taken into police custody in relation to allegations of domestic violence.

The party said  it treats all allegations of violence, particularly those involving women and children, with the utmost seriousness and said it condemn all forms of domestic violence and support a full, impartial, and professional investigation by the Guyana Police Force.

The party said it will let due process prevail and will move to take appropriate action.

“While the investigation is ongoing and the facts must be determined through the proper legal process, let there be no ambiguity about our values: violence has no place in our homes, our communities, or our politics. Should these allegations be substantiated, the Party will not hesitate to take the appropriate action consistent with our principles and commitment to accountability,’ the party noted.

The party said it remains steadfast in its belief that there can be no justification for violence against women or children.

It went further to say that public office is a position of trust and carries with it a heightened responsibility to uphold the law and demonstrate respect for the dignity and safety of others.

The party said it stands firmly on the side of justice, the protection of victims, and the rule of law as we have zero tolerance for domestic and every other form of violence.
