The owner of the Liquid Love nightclub, who was recently sentenced to 12 months in jail for withholding the passports of two Venezuelan women and employing a child, has now been slapped with an additional 15-year prison sentence.
A shocked Savita Persaud stood in the Magistrates’ Court this morning as the Chief Magistrate handed down the sentences after finding the woman guilty of trafficking in persons.
The first count of trafficking in persons was related to the trafficking of a 17-year-old-girl and for that, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
She was sentenced to an additional five years in jail on a second count of trafficking in persons related to the trafficking of an adult woman. The sentences will run concurrently.
In addition to the sentences, the trafficking-in-persons convict has been ordered to pay her two victims over $4 million in restitution.
During the trial, the Court learnt that between the 31st January and 8th March 2019, at Station Street, Kitty, Persaud recruited, transported and harboured the two women for sexual exploitation.
Guyana has been stepping up in investigation and prosecution of cases of trafficking-in-persons.
