(Antigua Observer) The Guyanese woman nabbed with cocaine at the VC Bird International Airport, in June, will spend the next three years behind bars after failing to pay the $262,500 fine imposed in the All Saints Magistrate Court yesterday.

Forty-nine-year-old Carlin Jocelyn Jackson who appeared before Magistrate Nagio Emanuel was fined $131,250 for importation and the same amount for possession with intent to supply two and a half pounds of cocaine.

The woman was reprimanded and discharged on possession of cocaine.

Jackson was ordered to pay the sum forthwith or in default she will spend 18 months at Her Majesty’s Prison on each count. The sentences will run consecutively.

Jackson was detained on June 15 at the VC Bird International Airport where the Class A drug was found concealed in her luggage. She was taken to court on July 9 and found guilty. She was remanded to prison until sentenced.

According to reports, the woman was seen operating in a suspicious manner which prompted narcotics officers on duty to conduct a search on her luggage.

During the search, the cocaine was discovered in two false compartments inside her suitcase. The illicit substance was estimated to cost some $40,000.

She was slapped with charges of possession of cocaine, possession with intent to transfer, importation and being concerned in the supplying of cocaine.

Jackson is to be sent back to her homeland when she completes her prison term.
