Agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit are stepping up their drug eradication efforts. On Wednesday, CANU agents were in East Bank Essequibo area and during an operation, the agents busted a 51-year-old man with 30 pounds of imported marijuana.

CANU said the man’s vehicle was intercepted in the Zeelugt New Housing Scheme and during a search of the vehicle in the presence of the driver, agents found twelve brick like parcels of what turned out to be marijuana that was from overseas.

CANU said the driver of the car, Pradesh Hadwar, was immediately arrested and taken to the CANU headquarters along with the marijuana.

It was at the headquarters that other agents confirmed that it was indeed foreign marijuana aka “poppy” that the man had in his possession.

CANU said the confiscated marijuana has a street value of more than $5 million. Investigations are ongoing into the incident. The accused could find himself in Court by Thursday afternoon.
