With Guyana still facing aggression from neighbouring Venezuela with its claims of Guyana’s Essequibo region, President Irfaan Ali believes that his party, the People’s Progressive Party, is Guyana’s best option to secure Guyana’s territorial integrity.
At a public meeting in Alexander Village on Wednesday night, the President said in a complex global environment, his party is best suited to safeguard Guyana.
“We live in a complex global environment and the first thing that we have to understand is that our sovereignty and national security is important, when you vote on 1st September, you are voting for a trusted international partner in this government to take care of our sovereignty and national security,” the President stated.
Two years ago, the President met and held talks with the Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, agreeing to an accord that prioritized peace in the region and respect. But since then, Venezuela has continued with its threats, even positioning its navy vessels near the oil ships in Guyana’s waters and questioning the captains about those vessels about their presence.

But President Ali told the meeting in Alexander village that his government’s leadership is second to none on a range of international issues, and said the strategic partnerships that the country has been able to form to keep it safe, remains one of the hallmarks of his administration’s achievements.
“Never before in the history of this country, have we formed so many strategic security partnerships and alliance to defend our sovereignty and our national security interests—we have alliances with France, with every single CARICOM state, we are now a member of the Regional Security System, we have alliance with Colombia, the United States, with Canada, with UK, with Canada and with India. We have been able to form the most inclusive, broad-based security partnership for Guyana int he last five years,” the President said.
The President said his re-election would ensure the renewal and expansion of international partnerships and the country’s safety.
He said there are also plans to improve port security, and formulate a system to fight drug trafficking and other illicit activities with the country’s international partners.
“You are voting to ensure that that integrated partnership is formulated to make Guyana to make Guyana safe, to keep our border safe and to ensure that our country is leading on the security front,” the President said.
The President told those gathered that there has never been a time in history when one country is presented with so much opportunities like Guyana.
