Senior legal luminary Ashton Chase has died

Senior legal luminary and co-founder of the Political Affairs Committee, Ashton Chase has died. He passed away yesterday at the age of 96.

It was the Political Affairs Committee, which he co-founded that led to the formation of the People’s Progressive Party. However, over the years, he became more involved in the labour movement and the legal system, placing active politics on the back burner.

In a statement last evening, President Irfan Ali said Ashton Chase’s death represents an incalculable loss to the nation, noting that his name and contributions will forever be etched in Guyana’s political, labour and legal history.

President Ali said Ashton Chase made an exceptional contribution to Guyana’s nationalist struggle and political history and was the last surviving member of the Political Affairs Committee which was established in 1946.

“He was among our finest legal minds and was a pillar of our country’s early trade union activism, authoring the most authoritative work on our trade union history”, Ali noted.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo in his statement said Guyana owes an eternal debt of gratitude to Chase, who he described as an outstanding son of the soil.

A number of other senior Government and PPP officials have extended their sympathy to the family of the late Senior Counsel, Ashton Chase.
