The reputed wife of convicted drug trafficker, Barry Dataram, is finding out that while love is blind, it can also get you some prison time.

The 21-year-old woman, Anjanie Boodnarine, was this morning sentenced to nine months in jail for attempting to smuggle illegal items into the Mazaruni Prison.

It was back in March, that Boodnarine was arrested with several contraband items during a visit to the Mazaruni jailhouse to see her convicted lover, Barry Dataram.

Dataram is serving an eight year jail sentence on two convictions related to drug trafficking and passport forgery.

Although, Boodnarine had been arrested in connection with the same charges, she was set free after being found not guilty. Still, after being set free, she remained close with her jailed lover and visited him often.

It was during one of those visits, that prison officials nabbed her with several cigarettes hidden in cheese sticks packages. She was immediately arrested and charged.

Her sentence was handed down this morning at the Bartica Magistrates’ Court.

The attempt to smuggling contraband items into the various jail houses across the country is nothing new. But the Acting Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels, has been expressing concern about the practice, even as security measures have been enhanced to stamp out the attempts.

He explained to News Source today that “for several years persons who have been involved in such practices were given a fine. Because the laws have not been reviewed and the fines are small, they have little or no impact on those persons. While we are faced with a bit of a overcrowding, it is our hope that this sentencing would serve as an example to others who attempt to smuggle contrabands into the prisons as their freedom can be jeopardized, just as those person who are already in prison”.
