Contractor charged for murder and attempted murder over bridge shooting

Thirty-eight year old landscape contractor, Robert Benn, was remanded to prison on Monday morning after being charged for murder in the death of 23-year-old, Colin Perreira and the attempted murder of Perreira’sĀ girlfriend, Gail-Ann Charon.

Dressed in black pants and white shirt, Benn stood quietly as the murder and attempted murder charges were read to him. He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charges.

The Prosecution’s case is that the contractor shot and killed the 23-year-old and injured the man’s girlfriend when he opened fire on their car when the man turned onto the bridge of his Tucville home.

He was represented in court by Attorney, Ronald Burch-Smith who said his client regretted the results of his action and was truly sorry for the loss of life and the injury to the young woman.

The Attorney claimed that Benn had been threatened that he would have been attacked and robbed at his home by persons unknown. That threat may have made him fearful and resulted in his decision to open fire on the car, although the driver was simply turning the car around to leave the street.

He will return to court on September 1, 2016.
