Fired GPL CEO’s salary and benefits amounted to $6.1M per month and he wanted $300,000 raise

While the Opposition People’s Progressive Party Civic administration has been outspoken on increases for public servants and a possible move to increase the salaries of government ministers and all Members of Parliament, the party has been silent on the hefty salary it rolled out to the recently fired Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Power and Light company.

The former CEO received a monthly salary, which included benefits, of $6.1 Million per month under the PPP Civic administration although he was poorly graded by the board of GPL and a request was made by the board for his dismissal. He requested a $300,000 increase in his salary in December of last year.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson on Thursday told the National Assembly that he is hurt by the fact that the PPP is claiming that the former CEO was fired because of his race and possible affiliation to the PPP. Patterson said that is far from the truth.

He explained to the National Assembly that long before the APNU+AFC coalition took office, the board of GPL had already recommended that the company cut ties with Dindyal as it give him a failing grade for his handling of the operations of the company.

Despite the recommendation of the GPL board, the former PPP Civic government kept him in his job and continued to pay him his super salary. When his contract expired in December 2014, the government at the time extended his time with the company monthly for six months. He pocketed the same salary and benefits for that period.

According to Minister Patterson, the former CEO was paid a monthly salary of $3.8M with a $875,000 gratuity.

Additionally, he received a monthly accommodation allowance of $500,000, $525,000 monthly for security along with a monthly leave passage of $210,000, and a monthly medical allowance of $210,000.

While GPL was recording losses, the CEO was pocketing $74.3 Million a year as his total salary. A new GPL board is to be put in place soon and a search has already started for a new Chief Executive Office.
