Fly Jamaica flights affected by technical problems

Scores of Fly Jamaica passengers in New York and Guyana were affected on Thursday and Friday as the airline faced technical issues with the aircraft and was forced to cancel and postpone a number of flights.

On Thursday, passengers traveling to Guyana and Jamaica from New York were faced with two delays and a cancellation after the aircraft had some technical problems that were being addressed. On Friday, the airline brought in an additional aircraft and scheduled two direct flights to Jamaica and Guyana to ease the build up in passengers.

The Jamaica flight was able to leave on schedule from New York’s JFK. However, just after the Georgetown bound passengers boarded their flight on the back up aircraft and were about to depart the pilot reported that there was a technical issue that he’s concerned about and the mechanics and engineers would need to troubleshoot the problem.

That process took close to an hour and a decision was eventually made to have the aircraft towed back to the gate and the flight cancelled. Fly Jamaica passengers were told that the technical issue with the aircraft was beyond the airline’s control. New York staff worked feverishly as they offered support to the customers. A decision was made to have the new flight depart on Saturday. Affected passengers in New York were accommodated at the Radisson Hotel, JFK. In Guyana, several of the affected passengers there were accommodated at the Princess. Hotel.

Many of the passengers while expressing worry over the delays and cancellations appeared satisfied with the accommodation arrangements made by the airline in New York.

Fly Jamaica which is owned by a Guyanese pilot and businessman, has been performing relatively well since it’s introduction to the Guyana market under a year ago. The airline owns its own aircraft and recently acquired another aircraft which will ok into operation soon.
