GECOM Commissioner Sandra Jones passes away

Commissioner of the Guyana Elections Commission, Sandra Jones, has died. News Source understands that she passed away overnight after a battle with cancer.

Ms. Jones, who was a Human Resources and development specialist, became a member of the Guyana Elections Commission back in 2012, after being nominated to the post by the then Opposition Leader, now President, David Granger.

She replaced former Deputy Mayor Robert Williams, who passed away while serving in the post.

Just over a year ago, Ms. Jones also served as a member of the Public Service Commission of Inquiry and was instrumental in coming up with many of the recommendations of the Commission.

Family members are this morning remembering Sandra Jones as a strong and caring woman who always provided a shoulder to lean on.

Earlier this year she was awarded with a national award, the Golden Arrow of Achievement.

President David Granger will now be expected to name a replacement for the Guyana Elections Commission.

The Commission would have three members nominated by the Government and three nominated by the Opposition.
