A Guyanese born, American citizen was on Monday slapped with a $75,000 fine after after pleading guilty to an attempting to smuggle 29 whistling birds out of Guyana charge.
The 27-year-old woman, Ramjit Takerdeen, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and agreed with the prosecution’s case that on October 31, 2015, she attempted to take the birds out of Guyana without any license for wildlife export.
The birds were discovered in hair curlers in the woman’s handbag. Airport security carried out a detail check of the woman’s hand luggage after they saw moving objects in the bag as it was being scanned and hear a whistling sound.
Some of the birds, according to the Police, were the pricy towa towa birds, which carry a hefty price tag of up to US$5000 each in the New York area.
