Pomeroon farmer shot dead in home; Suspect on the run, but dead man’s girlfriend held

Police investigators in the lower Pomeroon area are probing the murder of a 73-year-old man in his own home.

The dead man has only been identified as Deonarine, who is known to villagers as “Russian”.

According to a Police statement, the Friday night killing took place just after the elderly man and his 46-year-old girlfriend had arrived at his house.

The two were reportedly having a conversation when the farmer left to answer a call at his door. He was confronted by a masked gunman who was armed with a “long gun”.

The girlfriend jumped into action and reportedly held onto the gun. The suspect whipped out a knife and the woman held onto that also.

Eventually, the suspect ran from the house after pushing the woman down, but the elderly farmer gave chase.

It was while that chase was taking place down the stairs that a gunshot rang out. The suspect made good his escape while Deonarine fell to the ground with a gunshot wound to his side.

He was rushed to the Charity Hospital by boat, but it was too late. Doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police investigators suspect that the girlfriend might have recognised the masked gunman, and so she is being held for questioning as the hunt begins for the assailant.

The probe is continuing.
