As the busy holiday shopping season comes to an end in the coming week, President David Granger intends to meet with the Georgetown City Council early in the new year to look at a new approach to vending in the city.

During his Christmas Eve walkabout in the Stabroek market area, excited vendors greeted the President.

But beyond that excitement, many of them complained about being constantly moved around by the Council.

While being thankful for the opportunity to temporarily vend in areas, where regular vending no longer exists, some of the vendors said they would like a solution to their plight.

The President told the vendors that they are offering a legitimate service and he will be meeting with City Hall in January to have their concerns addressed and a long-term plan developed to address their worry.

“We have to sit down with City Council and decide how we can be more equitable… When I went to City Hall I said vending is a legitimate economic activity and we want to ensure that we provide the greatest happiness for the greatest number. That is what we want to do. I am not stamping out vending and I do not want to push them to the margins either. We will meet with the vendors because the vendors have concerns. This is not a picnic. It is not an excursion. We will meet with the vendors again and the City Council to see how best the vendors can do their work,” he said.

The relocation and movement of city vendors is a situation that has haunted the Georgetown City Council for years.
