Six Guyanese injured in Surinamese accident

Police in Suriname are reporting that six Guyanese nationals were injured early on Monday morning when the black Toyota Hilux land cruiser they were travelling in, suffered a blowout resulting in the driver losing control and the vehicle toppling a number of times.

Media reports out of Suriname stated that the accident occurred in Nickerie and of the six persons injured in the accident, five are women. The only man who was in the vehicle is believed to have been the driver.

All of the injured persons were rushed to the Regional Hospital Lachmipersad Mungra in Nickerie. Two of the injured have been listed as critical. Reports state that the Fire service had to be called in to assist in cutting a part the vehicle and assist in removing the injured.

The names of the injured persons have not been released but Surinamese Police have also confirmed that the vehicle had a Guyana license plate.

Scores of Guyanese drive over to Suriname regularly using the ferry service, especially on holiday weekends.
